What is IV Sedation?
For many patients, the key to a stress-free surgical experience is Intravenous (IV) Sedation, often referred to as “Twilight Sedation.” This method is designed to help you remain calm, comfortable, and relaxed throughout your dental treatment.
While you may drift in and out of a light sleep, the primary benefit of IV sedation is that it alleviates anxiety and often results in little to no memory of the procedure itself.
Choosing the Right Level of Sedation
To help you understand which option is best for your upcoming procedure, we have compared the two most common types of in-office sedation offered at Love Your Jaws.
| Feature | Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) | IV Sedation (Twilight Sleep) |
| Método | Inhaled through a nasal mask. | Administered via a thin IV line. |
| Level of Sedation | Light relaxation – you remain fully awake. | Deep relaxation – you drift in and out of sleep. |
| Amnesia Effect | Mild to none; you will likely remember the visit. | High; most patients have no memory of the procedure. |
| Recovery Time | Immediate- you can drive home. | Requires a short recovery period and a driver. |
| Safety Control | Effects stop once the mask is removed. | Dose is precisely controlled and can be reversed instantly. |
| Best For | Minor procedures and mild anxiety. | Wisdom teeth, implants, and high dental phobia. |
The goal of IV sedation is to use as little medication as possible to get the treatment completed. It is very safe, much safer than oral sedation. With IV sedation a constant “drip” is maintained via the intravenous tube. At any time an antidote can be administered to reverse the effects of the medications if necessary. Along with IV sedation there are also other different “levels” of sedation available to you in our office.
