What is General Anesthesia?

General Anesthesia is the most advanced level of patient comfort available in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Unlike local numbing or light sedation, general anesthesia induces a state of “controlled sleep.” You will be completely unconscious, unaware of the procedure, and will have no memory of the surgery once you wake up.

At Love Your Jaws, we utilize office-based general anesthesia to provide a seamless, painless experience for our most complex cases or for patients who prefer to be “completely out” during their treatment.

Why Choose General Anesthesia?

While many procedures can be performed with IV or conscious sedation, General Anesthesia is often the preferred choice for:

  • Extensive Surgeries: Such as full-arch dental implants (All-on-4), complex jaw reconstruction, or impacted wisdom teeth.
  • Severe Dental Anxiety: For patients whose phobia makes it impossible to remain calm under lighter sedation.
  • Medical Necessity: In cases where local anesthetics are ineffective due to acute infection or specific physiological needs.
  • Efficiency: It allows the surgeon to perform complex tasks quickly and precisely without patient movement.

Uncompromising Safety & Specialized Training

Your safety is our absolute priority. To provide general anesthesia in an office setting, an oral surgeon must complete years of hospital-based anesthesia residency, training alongside board-certified anesthesiologists.

Dr. Dimitrov and the team at Love Your Jaws maintain a state-of-the-art surgical suite equipped with:

  • Continuous Vital Monitoring: Tracking heart rhythm (EKG), oxygen saturation, and blood pressure in real-time.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Our facility is fully equipped and regularly inspected to meet the most stringent state dental board safety standards.
  • Advanced Recovery: A dedicated space where you can gently wake up under the direct supervision of our surgical staff.

Preparing for Your Procedure

To ensure the highest level of safety, patients receiving general anesthesia must follow these strict guidelines:

  1. Fast for 8 Hours: No food or drink (including water) for at least 8 hours prior to surgery.
  2. Bring a Driver: You must have a responsible adult accompany you, stay in the office during surgery, and drive you home.
  3. Medical Review: We will perform a comprehensive review of your health history and current medications during your consultation to customize your anesthesia plan.
