Sinus Precautions after Sinus Lift Grafting or Open Sinus Surgery
The following information applies when upper jaw bone height or width have been lost. The graft is placed to help resort your jawbone in preparation for possible implant replacement of the missing tooth or teeth.
You have had a Sinus Lift Augmentation procedure in your upper jaw. The procedure regains lost bone height in the area of your fist and second molar and occasionally second premolar. It is an important procedure in that it allows implant placement in an area that could not be implanted otherwise because of insufficient bone height due to an enlarged sinus.
The bone that has been grafted is most commonly a combination a combination of freeze-dried bone, artificial synthetic bone and your own bone. Because of this you may have two post-surgical wounds: the donor site and the recipient site.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BLOW YOUR NOSE FOR THE NEXT FOUR (4) WEEKS. Please AVOID the following:
Blowing Your Nose
It is best to wipe away nasal secretion carefully. After (2) Two Weeks, if you must blow your nose, blow gently through both sides at the same time. Do not pinch your nose; do not blow just one side at a time.
Sneezing
If you must sneeze, keep your mouth open and do not pinch your nose closed.
Sucking
Do NOT drink through a straw. Do not smoke.
Blowing
Do NOT play a wind instrument. Do NOT blow balloons.
Pushing or Lifting
Do NOT lift or push objects weighing more than 20 pounds.
Bending or Lifting
Keep your head above the level of your heart. Sleep with your head slightly raised.
Notify your Oral Surgeon or nurse if you bleed from your nose.
If you see bleeding from your nose, have neck stiffness, or increased sensitivity to bright light, or severe headache, call our office immediately.
Notify your oral surgeon or nurse if you are unable to take any of your medications as prescribed.
It is likely that you may be advised to take an antibiotic and decongestant as well as your regular pain medication. You must take these medications as prescribed. Do not stop taking them on your own. If you experience any problem with any medication, please call or text our office number (305) 661-5297 so that we can make an adjustment for you.
