Why the Chin Matters
The chin is the anchor of the face. It has a profound impact on your overall aesthetic, balancing the nose, lips, and neck. A “weak” or receding chin can create the illusion of a larger nose or a full neck, while a well-proportioned chin defines the jawline and complements your other facial features.
Genioplasty, often called a “chin lift” or chin augmentation, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the chin to achieve perfect facial harmony. At Love Your Jaws, we specialize in two distinct methods to help you achieve your ideal profile.
Sliding Genioplasty vs. Chin Implants
Depending on your anatomy and goals, we offer two primary types of chin surgery. While both improve the profile, they use very different techniques.
| Feature | Sliding Genioplasty | Augmentation (Chin Implant) |
| Method | Contouring and moving your natural bone. | Placing a silicone or ePTFE synthetic implant. |
| Correction | Can move the chin forward, back, up, or down. | Primarily adds forward projection (volume). |
| Material | Your own natural bone. | Synthetic medical-grade material. |
| Stability | Secured with tiny titanium plates (permanent). | Sits on top of the bone; secured with screws. |
| Best For | Complex asymmetry or vertical height changes. | Simple forward projection for a weak chin. |
Who is a Candidate for Genioplasty?
You may benefit from chin surgery if your chin size feels disproportionate to your face. Common reasons patients visit our South Miami office for genioplasty include:
- A Receding Chin: Often called a “weak” chin, which can make the neck look fuller.
- A Protruding Chin: A chin that sits too far forward.
- Facial Asymmetry: A chin that is shifted to one side.
- Vertical Discrepancy: A chin that is either too long or too short for the face.
Genioplasty is frequently paired with other procedures, such as Rhinoplasty or Neck Liposuction, to create a comprehensive “profile makeover.”
The Procedure: Precision Without Scars
At Love Your Jaws, we prioritize a seamless experience with “hidden” results.
- Anesthesia: The procedure is performed under General Anesthesia or deep IV sedation for your total comfort.
- No Visible Scars: A small incision is made inside the lower lip, in front of the gum line. This ensures there are no external scars on your face.
- The Reshaping: * In a sliding genioplasty, we perform an osteotomy (a precise cut in the bone) and slide the chin into its new, optimized position.
- In an augmentation, the implant is custom-fitted and secured in front of the bone.
- Final Touches: Small titanium plates and screws secure the new structure. These are biocompatible and generally stay in place permanently. The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.
- Timing: The surgery typically takes approximately one hour.
Recovery: What to Expect
- Immediate Care: A compression bandage is placed on your chin to minimize inflammation. This is usually removed in our office 1–2 days later.
- Comfort: While swelling and bruising are normal, discomfort is typically mild and easily managed with prescribed medication.
- Healing Timeline: Your internal stitches will dissolve within 7–10 days. Most patients feel “camera-ready” and can return to normal social activities within two weeks.
Potential Risks
As with any surgical procedure, there are minor risks to consider, including temporary lip numbness (which usually resolves within weeks), mild bleeding for the first 24 hours, or a very rare chance of infection. Our team provides comprehensive post-operative instructions to ensure a safe and speedy recovery.
