What is Lip Cancer?

Lip cancer is a type of oral cancer that develops in the squamous cells – the thin, flat cells that line the lips. While it can occur on either the upper or lower lip, it is significantly more common on the lower lip due to its increased exposure to the sun.

As a Board-Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Kroum Dimitrov specializes in the delicate balance of removing cancerous lesions while preserving the essential function and aesthetic appearance of the mouth.

Recognizing Lip Cancer Symptoms

Lip cancer often masquerades as a common skin irritation. If you have a lesion that does not resolve within two weeks, a professional evaluation is necessary.

Common Warning Signs:

  • A Persistent Sore: A sore or “scab” on the lip that bleeds, crusts over, and refuses to heal.
  • Color Changes: A white, flat, or scaly patch (leukoplakia) or a reddish patch on the lip.
  • A Palpable Lump: A thickening or firm area within the lip tissue.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Unexplained loss of sensation in the lip or chin area.
  • Pain: Persistent pain or tenderness that is not linked to an injury.

Primary Risk Factors

Living in South Florida increases our exposure to the primary driver of lip cancer: UV Radiation.

Risk FactorImpact
Sun ExposureProlonged UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds is the #1 cause.
Tobacco UseCigarettes, pipes, and cigars significantly irritate the lip tissues.
Alcohol ConsumptionHeavy drinking increases the vulnerability of oral cells to carcinogens.
Fair SkinIndividuals with lighter skin tones have less natural protection against UV damage.
Gender & AgeHistorically more common in men and individuals over 50, though cases in younger adults are rising.

Diagnosis and Surgical Excellence

If a suspicious area is identified, Dr. Dimitrov will perform a diagnostic biopsy. This is a quick, in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia to determine if cancerous cells are present.

Surgical Treatment & Reconstruction

If the biopsy confirms lip cancer (typically Squamous Cell Carcinoma), surgical removal is the primary treatment. Because the lips are vital for eating, speaking, and your smile, Dr. Dimitrov utilizes advanced reconstructive techniques:

Precision Excision: Removing the lesion with “clean margins” to ensure all cancer cells are gone.

Aesthetic Reconstruction: Using specialized “flap” techniques to restore the natural contour and movement of the lip.

Minimal Scarring: Incisions are placed strategically to follow the natural lines of the face (the “vermillion border”), making the results as discreet as possible.
